Barbecued Pork Spareribs

(Serves 6 to 8)

2 tablespoons butter
1 medium onion, finely diced or grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups water
1 tablespoon chili powder or more, to taste
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup brown sugar, packed
¼ cup vinegar
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
1 cup ketchup
2 sides pork spareribs

Melt butter.  Add onion and garlic and cook until soft.  Stir in remaining ingredients and simmer, uncovered, for ½ hour.  Brush sauce over spareribs.  Cook over low, hot coals for 1 hour, turning and basting meat every 10 minutes.

This sauce is also good on chicken, beef ribs, hamburgers and chops.
